Natal Super Strength is a unique mushroom strain Jon McGillivray discovered in 1995 in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. McGillivray, a mycologist, found this strain during his research on psychedelic fungi.
At first, scientists believed Natal Super Strength represented a new Psilocybe strain. However, genetic analysis revealed that it is actually a phenotype of P. cubensis. The mycological community still debates whether this strain deserves separate classification.
Natal Super Strength exhibits a fast and dense growth pattern. The mushrooms feature long stipes that turn blue when touched or damaged. The caps show colors ranging from white to light brown and change as the mushrooms mature.
The blue bruising indicates the presence of psilocybin, a compound found in many psychedelic mushrooms. This characteristic, along with its potent effects, has drawn significant interest from the psychedelic community.
Researchers continue to explore the genetic diversity of P. cubensis and the potential for discovering new strains with unique properties. Natal Super Strength’s discovery has opened up discussions about mushroom classification and the possibilities for new findings.
